BOYS SWIMMING: BNL’s Manke wins two sectional events

Alex Manke won sectional titles in the 200 and 500 freestyle races to qualify for the IHSAA state finals.

JASPER – Bedford North Lawrence’s Alex Manke won two sectional races on Saturday afternoon to qualify for the IHSAA state finals.

Manke won the 200-yard freestyle and 500 free to automatically advance to the preliminary round of the state championships at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis on Feb. 26.

BNL diver Alden Crosby finished second in diving to qualify for the regional on Tuesday at Bloomington North. The Stars finished fourth in the team competition with 326 points while Jasper won the crown with 392.5.

Manke splashed to the wall first in the 200 in 1:46.38. He followed that with a dominating performance in the 500, touching in 4:52.38 and finishing almost nine seconds ahead of his nearest competitor as he won that event for the second straight year.

The Stars were also the top seed in the 200 free relay following Thursday’s prelims, but the Stars settled for second in 1:33.46 while Heritage Hills clipped them at the wire in 1:33.23.

Crosby totaled 364.0 points in diving. Heritage Hills’ Austin Schnuck was the sectional champion with 387.3.

Manke will compete in the prelims on Friday night. The top 8 in each event will advance to the state championship races on Feb. 27, while places 9-16 will compete in the consolation races.
