73, complete tourney tuning

BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence’s final sectional preparation round ended with an explosion. Not literally. Golf courses are tame, quiet havens – unless Carl Spackler is chasing a gopher.

This fire was caused by Daylen Tidd, who torched the back nine of the Indiana University course while leading the No.15 Stars to a win over Bloomington North on Wednesday afternoon.

Tidd carded four birdies on the latter half and posted a 4-under 31 on that side while firing a 2-over 73, pacing BNL to a 309-328 triumph.

After a rough front side, after making the turn in 6-over 42, Tidd went to work, carding birdies on the 10th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes. What a way to finish.

BOYS GOLF: Stars strike a ‘match’ at Hickory

BNL’s Daylen Tidd posted an 8-and-6 victory at No.3 during Tuesday’s match-play competition at Brownstown.

in rare match-play event

BROWNSTOWN – Bedford North Lawrence broke from the norm and posted a unique victory, clipping Brownstown 3-2 in match-play format at Hickory Hills on Tuesday afternoon.

The No.15 Stars dominated the bottom of the lineup, winning two matches after only 12 holes, as they shifted away from stroke play and had to adjust to the intricacies of going head-to-head with an opponent.

“It’s a different kind of competition,” BNL coach Mike Wright said. “It was a good experience that broke the monotony of the season. As Daylen (Tidd) pointed out, he played some shots he wouldn’t normally play in stroke play because he got conservative.”

BNL shoots season-best score

in loaded event at regional site

HENRYVILLE – Koby Robb probably found a new pair of golf shoes on Saturday afternoon.

Robb left his spikes at Otis Park as the Stars made the journey to Champions Pointe for the Providence Invitational, so he was forced to borrow a pair from Charlie Tidd (the father of BNL’s Daylen Tidd). Thankfully, he didn’t leave his swing at home.

Robb fired an even-par 72 as BNL carded a season-best score of 303 on the layout that will host the IHSAA regional. Despite beating their previous season best by 12 shots, the Stars still finished third in a power-packed field that featured five ranked teams. Top-ranked Center Grove decimated everyone with a sensational score of 284 (4-under par as a foursome), while No.4 Bloomington South was second at 300.

Golfers, whether by reputation over the years or by the evidence of recent John Daly photos, are notoriously bad dressers. If the fashion police had been present at Otis Park on Thursday afternoon, Bedford North Lawrence would have deserved penalty strokes for its Senior Day attire.

The hideous Hawaiian shirts modeled by the Stars were the brainchild of senior leader Zak Cummings, who got the idea on Instagram and begged BNL coach Mike Wright every day for a month to allow the team to wear them during a match. Wright, against better judgment and the unwritten rules of golf etiquette, relented.

From the looks of the scores BNL shot, perhaps those floral nightmares should become standard issue. Maybe clothes don’t always make the man.

“I’m pretty pleased with a 159, coming back from the conference win,” BNL coach Mike Wright said. “It seems like, the years that we win the conference, this is a tough meet for us because there’s some kind of letdown.

GALENA – Bedford North Lawrence has reclaimed its throne.

The No.15 Stars edged defending champion Columbus East in the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament at Valley View on Saturday afternoon. BNL won its first league championship since 2011 and its 19th overall.

BNL, paced by Zak Cummings’ 77, carded a team total of 322 to clip the Olympians by three strokes in the eight-team field.

“It feels really good, especially when you come in as the favorite and keep everyone at bay,” BNL coach Mike Wright said. “We didn’t play our best, but we just grinded it out. I could tell we were going to be in a battle. We have a saying ‘Grind or die,’ and that’s the way it was.”

BOYS GOLF: No.5 South posts win over BNL

Zak Cummings stares through the rain after launching his tee shot on the third hole.

BNL’s Zak Cummings shot a 2-over 74 in the rain during Thursday’s match at Bloomington Country Club.

BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington South posted four scores in the 70s on its home course while conquering Bedford North Lawrence during a rainy 18-hole trip around Bloomington Country Club on Thursday afternoon.

The No.5 Panthers, paced by Tanner Shapiro’s 74, carded a team total of 305 while the No.15 Stars finished with 316.

The Stars, with Koby Robb still absent from the lineup while recovering from injury, couldn’t match South’s depth and course knowledge. BNL carded only two birdies and struggled to tame the fast greens most of the team had never seen before, yet fought through the weather conditions and totaled its second-best score of the year.

Nick Burris (76), Quinn Pizzo (77) and Joe Weiler (78) all had solid rounds for the Panthers, who will be the sectional favorites when BNL returns to the Indiana University course for the first stage of the state tournament later this season.

team title on the sectional course

BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence won its second straight weekend tournament, claiming the team title in the Bloomington North Invitational at Indiana University on Saturday afternoon.

The Stars, ranked No.20 in the latest state poll, carded a score of 315 to edge Avon (317) in the 16-team field.

This event had added significance, since it is played on the course that will host the IHSAA sectional later this season, and the Stars (playing without Koby Robb as he continues to deal with an injury) showed they will be a force in that postseason tournament.

Zak Cummings and Daylen Tidd both carded 2-over 39s, while Ethan Stanley, Blake Martin and Corbin Bushey all added 40s. Tidd led the assault with three birdies.

“We had a lot of birdies, and a lot of them came after mistakes,” BNL coach Mike Wright said “That’s one thing about this group. They bounce back. They might get down, but they know they have the ability to recover from it. It’s a neat thing to see, that they’ll fight to get back.
