BROWNSTOWN – Bedford North Lawrence swept three-set duels in doubles as the Stars clipped Brownstown 4-1 on Thursday afternoon, recording the 100th career win for coach Donnie Thomas in his 10 years with the program.

BNL’s Alex East and Corbin Bushey, still undefeated in sets that have gone to a tiebreaker, rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win over Sy Zickler and Sam Hoff at No.1 doubles, while Isaac Titche and Christopher Kidd battled back to conquer Jackson Lahrman and Gunnar Zickler 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 at No.2.

“It didn’t show how badly we played in the first set,” Thomas said. “I didn’t know what was wrong. We were a little off and a step behind. But as they went along, they played a lot better.

“It seems  like when the pressure is on, we pull it out. Sometimes we don’t look that good doing it, but they played super strong in that tiebreaker.”

BNL wins key tiebreakers

while clipping Lions 4-1

By Justin Sokeland

TheHHCSports.com

Alex East and Corbin Bushey have discovered the secret to success in tiebreakers, the tennis version of sudden-death overtime.

Bedford North Lawrence’s No.1 doubles duo remained unbeaten in tiebreakers and recorded the clinching point as the Stars conquered Loogootee 4-1 on the steamy asphalt courts at BNL on Tuesday afternoon.

The Stars also swept the singles while improving to 6-3.

Most tandems would have been temperamental and tormented after wasting a 5-2 lead in the second set, but the East-Bushey combination was perfectly content to work overtime. They’re now 3-0 in tiebreakers after slugging out a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Sheldon Christmas and Sebastian Toy, with Bushey smashing down the put-away point off an East serve.

BNL sweeps doubles

clipping Eagles 4-1

The oven was on broil, and the longer the matches cooked, the tougher they got for Bedford North Lawrence.

The Stars survived the heat, both from the blast-furnace asphalt of the refurbished courts and from Brown County, to clip the Eagles 4-1 on Thursday afternoon.

BNL swept the doubles, which featured new pairings because of a lineup shift, and battled from behind in each. At one point, with two singles matches already locked up, the Stars trailed on the three remaining courts. They needed at least one comeback and got two for the price.

“Those were great comebacks,” BNL coach Donnie Thomas said. “We didn’t play well, it was pretty ugly, but we won ugly. When it counted, they played well.”

BNL recovers quickly

to sweep past Jennings

By Justin Sokeland

TheHHCSports.com

Disappointment disappeared. Discouragement dissipated. Determination dominated.

After coming up short in an upset bid at Columbus East (one of the target teams on the BNL schedule) on Monday night, Bedford North Lawrence bounced back quickly just 24 hours later and took out a little frustration on Jennings County.

The Stars didn’t drop a set while pouncing on the Panthers 5-0 on the refinished home courts, highlighted by a lengthy match at No.2 doubles that lacked neither drama nor tension.

Isaac Titche and Christopher Kidd needed 90 minutes and a tiebreaker to complete the first set, but they made the wait worthwhile as they capped the sweep with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 victory over Kent Biehle and Cody St.John.

Stars leading the final match

as rain forces postponement

Bedford North Lawrence will have to wait a few days to clinch the championship in its own Invitational.

After winning the first-round match over Bloomfield, the Stars were leading Borden 2-0 in the final when rain swept over the asphalt on Saturday afternoon and forced a postponement of the conclusion of the singles matches to Friday.

BNL bounced the Cardinals 4-1 in the first round, and the Stars were in control of two singles matches with the Braves when the weather interrupted.

“Everybody, from top to bottom, was aggressive, and that was good to see,” BNL coach Donnie Thomas said. “After playing Bloomington North (on Thursday), we had better reaction times because there was more time to react and make good choices on where to put the ball.”
