COLUMN: 2016 year in review

BNL coach Jamie Hudson and the Stars received a bye for the first round of the sectional.

Former BNL boys basketball coach Jamie Hudson was a key part in several storylines during the 2015-16 campaign.

Where did the 2015-16 season go? It was the vapor that appeared for a little while and vanished. Somewhere between August’s heat and May’s monsoon rains, Bedford North Lawrence crammed in 19 sports and several hundred events. And even when the school doors close for the short summer, the games go on.

The sports year was interesting, to understate the obvious. Basketball dominated the headlines again, of course, and captured the public interest with a controversial coaching change, but other teams and individual athletes made the campaign memorable with their accomplishments.

Here’s a look at the Top 20 stories of the past year:

20. BNL baseball raises over $9,000 in Coaches vs. Cancer game: Sometimes it doesn’t matter who wins. The Stars honored cancer survivors and remembered the disease’s victims during its annual fundraiser game with county-rival Mitchell. For the record, Austin Long struck out 10 as the Stars overpowered the Bluejackts 10-0 in six innings.

19. Megan Lambrecht shatters school record: Lambrecht, a sophomore, pulled off a unique double play, competing in track and softball simultaneously during a hectic spring. She made it worthwhile when she shattered the school record in the shot put, heaving that ball 37-11 while winning the Hoosier Hills Conference title in that event.

Wright guided BNL golf

to state finals for first

time since 2009 season

By Justin Sokeland

TheHHCSports.com

Bedford North Lawrence boys golf coach Mike Wright was named TheHHCSports.com Coach of the Year after leading the Stars to the 2016 state finals.

Wright, in his 18th season, guided BNL to the Hoosier Hills Conference title, its first since 2011. The Stars finished second in the IHSAA sectional at Indiana University, then qualified for their first appearance in the state championship since 2009 with a third-place finish against a loaded field in the regional at Champions Pointe.

“Getting to the state finals is an accomplishment in itself, but going there with a sectional no longer at Otis Park is something,” Wright said. “Getting there, not going through Otis (the sectional was moved in 2013) means a little more.

Flinn played soccer during the fall campaign and helped the Stars finish 6-8-5. He was a starter on the basketball team, averaging 2.7 points (scoring a career-high 11 against Corydon) and 1.3 rebounds as BNL went 14-11.

He made the major impact in track. Flinn was a member of the 400 and 1600 relays that won Hoosier Hills Conference, sectional and regional championships while qualifying for the IHSAA state finals in both races.

Just one lap. That’s all. One circuit around the Robert C. Haugh track at Indiana University. How difficult can that be?

With the pressure of the IHSAA state championships knotting the shoes and stomach, with the emotion of a senior running his final race adding weight to the legs, with the stress of a teammate’s dependence draped across the back, it’s the longest, toughest lap in the lives of Bedford North Lawrence’s fantastic foursome.

The quartet of seniors Alex Adams, Isaac Kuehn and Garrett Flinn, plus junior Micah Wagner, will compete in two relays during the state finals on Saturday afternoon. They will combine to complete one lap in the 400 relay, then each run a circuit during the 1600 relay that culminates the meet.

Adams wants to run the race of his life, and it might take that type of supreme effort for the Stars to fulfill their dreams of qualifying for an award, an earned invitation to the podium to be honored among the elite. Only the top 9 (out of 27) will make medal stand. And BNL has a lot of work to do.

The Stars are seeded 20th in the 1600 (3:25.14) and 25th in the 400 (43.72). That doesn’t faze them.

Lambrecht, BNL boys relays

in position to qualify for state

By Justin Sokeland

TheHHCSports.com

Bedford North Lawrence sophomore Megan Lambrecht has beaten herself up, playing two power-based sports simultaneously this spring, and she would not recommend her double-dip with softball and track be duplicated.

All her aches and pains will be worth it if she qualifies for the state finals during the IHSAA track regional at Bloomington North on Tuesday night. Lambrecht and three BNL teammates will battle for berths in the state championship at Indiana University on June 3.

The top three in each event will advance, and Lambrecht is positioned to challenge for one of those coveted spots. While her softball teammates are busy facing New Albany in the sectional semifinal at Seymour, she will compete in the shot put, seeded fourth in the field of 12.
