Somebody had the math wrong. Bedford North Lawrence went to the 1600 relay, the final event of the annual county meet with Mitchell, believing it needed to win the last race to conquer the Bluejackets. Turns out the Stars were comfortably in front.

But that sense of urgency brought out the best in BNL’s best foursome.

BNL-Mitchell results

In the most dramatic and thrilling race of the day, the Stars roared from behind in the anchor leg, with Micah Wagner capping a huge scoring meet with a tremendous effort on the final stretch to the finish line, to win the showcase race and cap a 72.5-58.5 win over the Bluejackets on Tuesday afternoon.

The girls meet lacked intrigue as the Stars swept the field events en route to an 86-46 triumph.

That last race, which seems to bring out the best in tired runners, had a thrill on every turn. Garrett Flinn, Alex Adams, Isaac Kuehn and Wagner traded the lead with the Bluejackets on successive laps. When Wagner took the baton for the final circuit, he was behind, and he trailed by three strides around the third turn.

Bedford North Lawrence girls coach Jo Scott was worried, afraid that giving up 15 points in the relay races was too much to overcome, fretting that a disqualification because of a botched handoff in the 400 relay would cost her Stars the meet.

She wasted a lot of nervous energy. Had it all the way, the Stars did.

BNL-Edgewood results

BNL gave up a lot of ground to Edgewood but made it up with quality depth while squeezing past the Mustangs 67-65 in the home opener on Tuesday afternoon. On the flip side, the Stars weren’t as fortunate as the Edgewood boys edged BNL 66-65.

To make BNL’s comeback even more remarkable, Edgewood swept the girls pole vault, meaning the Stars made up a 24-point gap in the other 12 events. Everything had to fall into place perfectly, and it did as freshman Alana Alexander and sophomore McKenna Garrison each won two events to lead the charge.

“Honestly, I told my girls, if you lose all three relays you can’t win a meet,” Scott said. “But we got enough firsts and seconds to pull it out.”

Alexander won the 100 (13.83) and 200 (27.94) while Garrison claimed the 100 hurdles (18.57) and the long jump (14-7). BNL also recorded wins by Zoe Zollman (6:04.42 in the 1600), Carrie Flinn (12:58.64 in the 3200), Mikaela Rainey (111-4 in the discus) and Megan Lambrecht (35-10 in the shot put).
