BNL’s Bailee Gilmore, who finished her four-year career with BNL coach Aaron Sanders, finished tied for 59th in the state finals after rounds of 90-84.

CARMEL – Bedford North Lawrence senior Bailee Gilmore completed her high school career on Saturday afternoon during the second and final round of the IHSAA state championship at Prairie View.

After a disappointing 90 during the rain-delayed first round, Gilmore came back with a second-day 84 and finished tied for 59th in the field. She carded a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole, but she struggled with her overall game.

Final round scores

“I still didn’t bounce back like I wanted, but it just wasn’t going for me this weekend,” Gilmore said. “Everything I tried to do, I couldn’t. Everything I did bad yesterday, I did well today, But everything I did well yesterday, it was bad today. It was just kind of a mess.

“I couldn’t hit any solid shots. Whether it was with my driver or irons, nothing was coming off solid. It was either left, right or way short. I couldn’t get it figured out.”

BNL senior struggles

with first-round 90

CARMEL – Bailee Gilmore’s opening round in the IHSAA state finals was one she would like to forget.

After fulfilling a career-dream of qualifying for the event, Bedford North Lawrence’s senior star struggled on Friday, firing a season-high 90 at Prairie View. She will compete in the second and final round on Saturday.

State finals scoring

Gilmore got off to a solid start, playing the first four holes in 1-over. But she suffered a damaging 8 on the par-4 fifth, and she never recovered, carding only three pars (and enduring two rain delays that totaled 3 hours) following that problem.

Bailee Gilmore hates to lose, just hates it, and that will take her far in life. That red-haired temper will flare, and the competitive drive will quickly surface, and she will push herself to succeed.

That determination has taken her a long way in golf, from a kid who first picked up a club in a serious manner in April of 2013 and struggled to break 100 much of her first season, to an elite state finals qualifier in her final high school campaign. So don’t be surprised if she returns from the IHSAA state championship with some sort of medal.

First round tee times

“I’m not going out there just to be there,” she said. And that’s the perfect mindset as the Bedford North Lawrence senior prepares for her final two rounds, on the biggest stage. She’s going to accomplish something.

Gilmore has already done that, joining an exclusive list of BNL players who have advanced to the finals. She will taken her place in program history on Friday morning, when she tees off at 8:48 a.m. at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. And she wants more.

BNL sets school record but

falls 3 shots shy of qualifying

for IHSAA state championship

MONTGOMERY – Asked to play its best in the tournament marked as the ultimate challenge, Bedford North Lawrence exceeded expectations. It was almost good enough.

The Stars shattered the school scoring record with a sizzling team total of 322 during the IHSAA regional at Country Oaks on Saturday afternoon, but they came up one spot short in their quest to qualify for the state finals for the first time since 1985.

For senior Bailee Gilmore, her best was better than almost all the rest. She carded a 1-over 73 to earn one of the individual spots reserved for the two state championship rounds at Prairie View on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. But the Stars finished fourth in the 18-team field, just three shots away from their goal, and that’s the most agonizing finish of all. So close.

Regional scores

Yet BNL did all it could. When the school mark is smashed by 15 shots, when sophomore Carly Stigall cards a career-best 79, there was little left out on the course.

“We came down here and they brought their best,” BNL coach Aaron Sanders said. “Not everybody can do that. It took a lot of guts to do what we did today. I’m real proud of them. They’re a bunch of gamers. They brought their A game today. It would have been nice to have been a few shots better, but shooting 322 we’re certainly happy with that. That’s a great number for this team.”

The mission is not impossible, for Bedford North Lawrence has proven it is capable of posting the necessary numbers to challenge the state’s elite teams. There is no question it will be difficult, but then nothing worthwhile was really ever easy.

The Stars will compete in the IHSAA regional at Country Oaks on Saturday, and the goal is simple: finish among the top three teams in a loaded field of 18 and advance to the state championship for the first time since 1985.

Winning the title might be beyond everyone’s reach, if two-time defending champion Evansville North duplicates its performance from the sectional. No.2 North shot a state-record 290 to win its first stage of the state tournament series. In comparison, BNL won its own sectional at Otis Park with 347.

They smiled, they posed for championship pictures, they took home every ribbon and trophy. Yet Bedford North Lawrence might have been the most dissatisfied sectional winner in school history.

The Stars cruised unchallenged to their fourth straight IHSAA sectional crown on their home course on Saturday afternoon, posting a whopping 68-stroke margin of victory in the 7-team field. Bailee Gilmore won her second straight medalist title, and BNL had the top three scores in the field.

Sectional scores

How dominant were they? The rest of the teams and individuals could have combined their four best scores and would have still lost by 32 shots. BNL’s only competition was with itself.

And from that standpoint, BNL’s team score of 347 was not pleasing. Bailee Gilmore’s winning score of 81 was unusually high. BNL had more displays of frustration – slammed clubs, open-hand smacks on the thigh – than birdies. The Stars are chasing a state finals ticket, and that score won’t come close to qualifying in next week’s loaded regional at Country Oaks. And they know that.

High school golf is a team sport, but this day, this final walk of the hilly back nine at Otis Park, was about the one individual who represents all that is good about the game.

Bailee Gilmore, the lone senior, carded a 1-over 36 as the Stars posted a team total of 162 for wide-margin wins over Springs Valley (206) and Brownstown (210) on Thursday afternoon.

Four years have melted away since a raw left-hander with virtually no golf background picked up a club and decided she was going to learn, to conquer a game that humbles most, to boldly go where few have gone – from novice to champion.
