Floyd Central and Columbus East, which shared the HHC title, both had four players on the First Team. Floyd’s Gracie Fitzgerald, Emma Pappas, Katie Yankey and Cheyenne Brown were honored, while East’s Lindsey Stoughton, Maggie Lewis, Morgan Martindale and Karlee Dowd were selected. GIRLS SOCCER: ‘Devastating’ loss in sectional final

South scores ‘unearned’ goals

to deny BNL 3-0 in Class 2-A

sectional championship duel

ELLETTSVILLE – The worst of shots created the best of goals, and the worst of emotions, as Bedford North Lawrence was kicked out of the Class 2-A state tournament.

If soccer had a statistical category for “unearned” goals, Bloomington South certainly had its share in the sectional final on Thursday evening. Every South score, it could be argued, was a gift. But in the one-and-done, sudden-death, season-over finality of the postseason, it matters not how, only how many.

The Panthers (13-4-2) took advantage of BNL breakdowns for a 3-0 victory, advancing to the regional semifinal at Jasper on Wednesday while winning their third sectional crown in the last four years. The Stars (11-4-3) suffered a cruel and unusual loss while falling short of the first sectional title in program history.

As tears flowed behind her, BNL coach Kelsey Pace called it “devastating.” And perhaps that was all that could be said. South dominated possession, held a 15-5 edge in shots, and created the better scoring chances. Those weren’t the ones that doomed the Stars.

“They didn’t even score on their best opportunities,” Pace said. “They had much better shots than those three. I really don’t know what happened. We should probably be in overtime.”

BNL rolls to 6-0 victory

over Edgewood, will

face South in 2-A final

ELLETTSVILLE – Kat Emery scored two goals as Bedford North Lawrence stopped Edgewood 6-0 in the Class 2-A sectional semifinal at Edgewood on Tuesday night.

The Stars (11-3-3) advanced to face Bloomington South, a 4-0 winner over defending sectional champion Bloomington North in the first semifinal, in the championship on Thursday at 6 p.m. BNL has never won a sectional title.

BNL, which ended the regular season with a 3-1 win over the Mustangs, had trouble finding any cracks in the net work of Edgewood goalie Taylor Thomas. The Stars finally broke through, after two of their first 10 shots hit the crossbar, with Emery’s first goal in the 26th minute.

Kiana Brown, who continued her hot streak with her 23rd goal in the last 8 matches, gave BNL a 2-0 halftime lead with a shot that deflected off a defender and into the net in the 31st minute.

BNL senior cards another

hat trick during 3-1 victory

ELLETTSVILLE – No defense can stop Bedford North Lawrence senior Kiana Brown’s current scoring spree.

Brown recorded another hat trick as the Stars conquered Edgewood 3-1 on Monday night. Brown has now scored 22 goals in the last seven matches, and BNL (10-3-3) has ridden her hot streak to six wins during that span.

Brown gave the Stars a 1-0 lead with a goal off Kat Emery’s assist in the 25th minute of the first half. She added another in the 53rd minute, converting her own rebound after the initial shot deflected off an Edgewood defender.

BNL senior Kiana Brown scored five goals during Thursday’s 11-1 victory at Trinity Lutheran.

SEYMOUR – Kiana Brown has become a scoring machine for Bedford North Lawrence.

The senior forward exploded for five goals as the Stars ran over Trinity Lutheran 11-1 on Thursday afternoon. While it’s unclear whether that represents a school record, Brown’s eruption matched the five that teammate Kat Emery scored last year at Brown County.

Brown has now scored 19 goals in the last six outings, and the Stars improved to 9-3-3 with their fifth victory in the last six matches.

“Our passing was stellar and it got us some great looks at the goal,” BNL coach Kelsey Pace said. “Kiana had a huge night and Kat helped her out with some great assists.”

Emery got the Stars rolling with goal in the 7th minute, and Lexi Russell followed with two straight (in the 15th and 23rd minutes). Brown started her scoring spree with first-half goals in the 24th minute and 31st minute.

Brown and Russell both recorded hat tricks as the Stars improved to 7-3-3 overall and finished 3-3-1 in the Hoosier Hills Conference race.

Playing on a rain-soaked, sloppy field, with a cold rain still falling, the Stars didn’t slow down. They broke loose for three goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half to pull away.

“I was proud of the girls for coming out and overcoming so many obstacles and distractions,” BNL coach Kelsey Pace said. “The field was sloppy, the rain was cold, and hair and nail appointments (for the Homecoming dance) loomed. They still came out and played a great game of soccer.”

BNL and Seymour battle

to another 1-1 stalemate

on BNL’s Senior Night

By Justin Sokeland

TheHHCSports.com

Over the past two seasons, Bedford North Lawrence and Seymour have battled for 240 minutes and haven’t settled anything.

For the third consecutive clash, and for the second time this season, the Stars and Owls finished in a 1-1 deadlock, and that ending didn’t satisfy a team celebrating Senior Night for three BNL captains.

Perhaps another stalemate was fitting. Both goals were far from orthodox, and the bruises and injuries far outnumbered the scoring opportunities. When familiar foes play this often, and this close, attitudes get chippy, elbows get sharper, and collisions are inevitable. Nothing could separate them this time.

BNL scored off a penalty kick early in the first half, and Seymour struck with an own goal only 16 seconds into the second. Style points were not awarded, and the physicality of the match would not have granted many of those anyway. Toughness was the issue, and neither buckled.
