Bedford North Lawrence boys golf coach Mike Wright was named Coach of the Year after leading the Stars to the 2016 state finals.

Wright, in his 18th season, guided BNL to the Hoosier Hills Conference title, its first since 2011. The Stars finished second in the IHSAA sectional at Indiana University, then qualified for their first appearance in the state championship since 2009 with a third-place finish against a loaded field in the regional at Champions Pointe.

“Getting to the state finals is an accomplishment in itself, but going there with a sectional no longer at Otis Park is something,” Wright said. “Getting there, not going through Otis (the sectional was moved in 2013) means a little more.

“I don’t know the true definition of team, but in my eyes this would be example of what it would be. These kids have been together, worked together, and would have hated it had an individual or two gone to the state without the whole team. That’s not who we are. That’s why this should be a fitting end to our season.”

Wright made a late play for the honor. Aaron Sanders took the girls golf program to its third straight sectional title (on the home course) while Jeff Allen propelled the Stars to the girls basketball sectional crown with a final 19-8 record. Former boys basketball coach Jamie Hudson guided the Stars to a 14-11 record after a 2-5 start.

Other notable performances included Brad Gilbert in softball (losing to Floyd Central in the 4-A sectional final) and Scott Hiles in boys track (two relays to the state finals).

Sanders and Allen shared the honor last season, while Sanders and Damon Bailey were named co-winners in 2014.

Garrett Flinn was named the male Athlete of the Year, and Jaclyn Dufresne won the female Athlete of the Year. will name the top stories of the year on Saturday.
