Brown, Russell score 3 each
as Stars smack Jeffersonville
Kiana Brown and Lexi Russell ignored the elements and powered Bedford North Lawrence to a 6-0 victory over Jeffersonville on Saturday morning.
Brown and Russell both recorded hat tricks as the Stars improved to 7-3-3 overall and finished 3-3-1 in the Hoosier Hills Conference race.
Playing on a rain-soaked, sloppy field, with a cold rain still falling, the Stars didn’t slow down. They broke loose for three goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half to pull away.
“I was proud of the girls for coming out and overcoming so many obstacles and distractions,” BNL coach Kelsey Pace said. “The field was sloppy, the rain was cold, and hair and nail appointments (for the Homecoming dance) loomed. They still came out and played a great game of soccer.”
Russell got the scoring started in the fifth minute, and Brown added two goals (the 26th and 35th minutes) before Russell clicked again for a 4-0 halftime advantage. Russell competed her hat trick first with a goal in the 52nd minute, and Brown (who has scored 11 goals in the last four matches) got hers in the late stages.
“The field conditions were not ideal, and luckily the excess humidity on the ball favored us the whole time,” Brown said. “We are playing much better as a whole, and when our defense can play in the middle of the field, we get more opportunities. I was fortunate enough to get a couple to sink.”
Bridget McFarland, Kat Emery and Raven Russell added assists, and BNL’s defense did not allow a shot on goal.
“I can’t say enough about our defense,” Pace said. “It was a good day.”
The Stars will visit Salem on Tuesday.
