JASPER – Bedford North Lawrence freshman Sidney Carlile qualified second in the 100-yard backstroke during the IHSAA swimming sectional preliminaries on Thursday night.

The finals in each event are set for Saturday afternoon, and the winner in each race will automatically advance to the state finals in Indianapolis on Feb. 12-13. BNL has not advanced an individual to the state meet in six years.

Carlile touched the wall in 1:03.63, just off the pace of Southridge’s Kera Jochem, who earned the top seed in 1:03.40.

Other top finishes for the Stars came from Joslyn Wever (third in the 100 freestyle in 58.17 and fourth in the 200 free), Hayley Hatfield (third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.34 and fourth in the 200 individual medley) and Carlile (fourth in the 100 butterfly). The Stars were also third in the 400 free relay.

Wever improved five spots from her seed time in the 200 and three in the 100.

“Last year her sectional meet didn’t go so well and this year she came in and took control,” BNL coach Terry Tlustek said. “It was really fun to see her grinning from ear to ear after those two swims.”

BNL’s Victoria Orender (200 IM and 100 breaststroke) and Kaiti Siedl (50 free) also qualified for the finals, and BNL was fourth in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.
“It is going to be extremely hard to catch Jasper, but we can get a strong seocnd┬áplace if these girls come out and are determined to swim like they did tonight,” Tlustek said. “It was a fun night. These girls have worked hard and are tapering well and it is very fun to watch.”
Diving prelims are set for Saturday morning.
