Stars conquer Edgewood
5-0 for first win of season
ELLETTSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence coach Joni Stigall promised to celebrate each win her inexperienced Stars recorded this season.
At last, the Stars can play a little Kool and the Gang and break into a victory dance.
BNL posted its first win of the season on Thursday afternoon, pounding out a 5-0 triumph at Edgewood.
“I’m so happy for the girls to get that win,” Stigall said “They needed to win. We knew they would be few and far between, but we really thought we would have more at this point.”
The Stars made up for earlier missed opportunities in emphatic fashion. Hope Martin conquered Hailea Howard 6-1, 6-3 at No.1 singles, Nikola Malkova fought off distractions to deck Carly Bennett 6-4, 6-3 at No.2, and McKenzie Messmore – playing only her second varsity match – downed Jessica VanAllen 6-3, 6-4 at No.3.
“McKenzie hung in there,” Stigall said. “She drives people crazy because she gets to every ball and almost gets every ball back. Once we teach her to hit some winning shots, she’s going to be a tough competitor.”
In doubles, Ali Adams and Jaclyn Dufresne rollled past Emily Birtles and Allie Frye 6-2, 6-2 at No.1, while Jenna Williams and Emily Chastain stopped Elizabeth Babbert and Annabelle French 6-3, 6-1 at No.2.
“Both doubles teams were solid,” Stigall said. “They won a lot of points at the net and didn’t give their opponents a chance to get in the match. We were the better team but we played well on every court.
“I think if we could redo a couple of matches we might have more wins, but we’re not going to look back. We’re just going to keep looking forward and improving and see what the rest of our season holds.”
The Stars (1-9) will host Columbus East in the first round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament on Monday.
