Columbus East swept the singles, but Bedford North Lawrence posted some progress during its rematch with the Olympians in the first round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament on the upper courts at BNL on Monday afternoon.
The Stars (1-10) suffered a 5-0 loss to East last week. This time, BNL’s senior duo of Jaclyn Dufrense and Ali Adams broke through at No.1 doubles to put the Stars on the board during a 4-1 setback.
East was too tough elsewhere. And BNL coach Joni Stigall readily admitted that. East dropped only 6 games in singles and dominated the second doubles court while advancing to the second round.
“They’re just a better team than we are, but that duo (the Dufrense-Adams combination) has gotten so much better,” Stigall said. “That’s an improvement. We’re just going to focus on that.”
Dufrense and Adams went to a shortened third-set tiebreaker to conquer Kendall Gerkin and Esta Morrison 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. The Stars had forced a first-set tiebreaker against the same duo during the first meeting. This time, they pulled through.
“They read the court well and communicate well,” Stigall said. “Jackie is to the point where she understands what her role is on the court. If I could have just a couple of more years with her, I’d give about anything for that. They just play really well together.”
East wasn’t disturbed too much on the other courts. Megna Chari, a talented freshman, rolled past Hope Martin 6-0, 6-0 at No.1 singles, Adycin Rager fought off Nikola Malkova 6-4, 6-1 at No.2, and A.J. Pollert disposed of McKenzie Messmore 6-0, 6-1 at No.3.
East’s Carolyn Travis and Lauren Graham stopped Jenna Williams and Emily Chastain 6-1, 6-2 at No.2 double.
The Stars will compete in the consolation round of the HHC on Wednesday.
