GIRLS TENNIS: North drops BNL in sectional

Hope Martin and the Stars fell to No.20 Bloomington North in the sectional semifinal on Thursday.

BLOOMINGTON – No.20 Bloomington North dropped only six games while rolling to a 5-0 victory over Bedford North Lawrence in the semifinal round of the IHSAA sectional at North on Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars advanced to the final to meet Martinsville (a 5-0 winner over Edgewood), while the Stars closed their season with a 2-12 record.

“North is a very good team,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “I was very pleased with the way we played. We hung in on some tough points and played well. They are just a really good, experienced team.”

In singles, North’s Anna McCoy stopped Hope Martin 6-2, 6-0 at No.1, Carolina Lopes defeated Nikola Malkova 6-0, 6-1 at No.2, and Kelly Fox blanked McKenzie Messmore 6-0, 6-0 at No.3.

North’s Nicole Ortiz and Bailey Gardner conquered Ali Adams and Jaclyn Dufresne 6-1, 6-2 at No.1 doubles while Jordan Trilling and Lillian McAfee shut out Jenna Williams and Olivia Riley 6-0, 6-0 at No.2.

BNL will start its offseason work, hosting open courts for high school and middle school players on Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon starting in June.
