BNL blanks Edgewood

for 16th win this season

ELLETTSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence concluded the regular season in record-setting style on Monday afternoon.

The Stars, who shut out Edgewood in the final match of the Edgewood Invitational on Saturday, duplicated that result with a 5-0 victory over the Mustangs. BNL recorded its 16th win of the year, which broke the school mark for team victories in a season.

“Give credit to these kids, and to them wanting to get better, and all the coaches that have helped,” said BNL coach Donnie Thomas, who got doused with ice water following the triumph. “Without the ‘want to’ and the help, they wouldn’t be where they are.”

BNL had little trouble in the finale. Ian Dillman dominated Austin Hammond 6-1, 6-1 at No.1 singles, Brandt Callahan topped Evan Whitlow 6-3, 6-0 at No.2, and Logan Bland-Chastain defeated Houston Holmes 6-1, 6-1 at No.3.

In doubles, Alex East and Corbin Bushey won a first-set tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 victory over Tyler Lunn and Noah Brooks at No.1. Isaac Titche and Christopher Kidd downed Ben Holmes and Jake Stevens 6-4, 6-4 at No.2.

The Stars (16-6) will start sectional action on Wednesday when they face Bloomington South at 5 p.m. at South. The Panthers conquered BNL 5-0 during the regular-season clash on Aug. 29.

“We get to play our old friend,” Thomas said. “We will try to play them tough on all the courts. They can dump water on me again if they beat South.”

Edgewood will face Martinsville in the sectional opener on Tuesday. That winner will meet Bloomington North in the other sectional semifinal on Wednesday. The final is set for Thursday at 5.
