HUNTINGBURG – Bedford North Lawrence advanced six wrestlers to the Indiana High School Athletic Association regional during sectional action at Southridge on Saturday afternoon.
The top four in each weight division advanced to the regional.
BNL junior Jon Godsey was the sectional runner-up at 220 pounds. Godsey decked Salem’s Aaron Hollen in 1:43 in the first round, then kncoedk off top seed Cameron Meade of Washington by a 5-3 decision in the semifinal.
Godsey was pinned by Mitchell’s Delaney Wade in 1:24 in the final.
Jacob Ray, a sectional champion last season, finished third at 120. Ray (17-13) fell to Paoli’s Zayne Bartholomew (by pin in 4:14) in the first round, then recovered to pin Crawford County’s Dustin McClure in 2:34 in the consolation round.
Jaren Abel also finished third at 126. Abel (18-13) opened with a 7-5 decision over Washington’s Brandon Richter, then fell to Forest Park’s Colton Glenn (by pin in 0:44). Abell bounced back to beat Crawford County’s David Sage 10-2 in the consolation round.
Caleb Higgins (15-19) was fourth in 152. He suffered a pin loss to Jasper’s Reid Eckert in 48 seconds in the first round, then clipped Mitchell’s Austin Kirk 4-3 in an elimination match. Higgins fell in Washington’s Sam Smith in 1:00 in the consolation round.
Dakota Hutchens (5-12) was fourth at 182. He lost to Washington’s Jake Owens (pin in 1:08) in the semifinal round before falling to Jasper’s David Derr (pin in 2:45) in the consolation.
Neil Amstutz (12-16) finished fourth at 195. Amstutz pinned Washington’s Gunner Williams in 3:28, then got trapped by Gregory Brown in 4:24 in the semifinal. He was pinned by Williams in a rematch during the third-place match in 0:49.
The Stars advanced to the regional at Bloomington South on Feb. 6. The top four from that tournament will qualify for the semistate in Evansville on Feb. 13.
